Just when you thought Panasonic’s rugged laptops couldn’t get tougher they did!
Remember when the cutting edge CF-31 Toughbook was launched in 2012? It was heralded as the new flagship of Toughbooks. A sixth generation machine, it set new standards and was recognized as the most robust Toughbook ever. Developed for mobile workers, particularly those in the military and healthcare industry, it combined the performance expected from a good quality desktop computer with features required for extreme outdoor use. It boasted faster graphics and battery power that could keep going for close on 24 hours. An enhanced “concealed mode” made it the best choice for mission-critical environments.
All these features and more made the CF-31 the best rugged laptop choice for years.
Its replacement, the CF-33 is a state-of-the-art machine. A rugged two-in-one hybrid, it is fully detachable and so can be used as a laptop or a tablet depending on your immediate needs.
Comparing the CF-33 and CF-31 Toughbooks
In terms of size, the CF-33 is an inch thinner. The CF-31 measured 11.9 x 11.5 inches while the new model measures only 11.8 inches x only 9.5 inches. Because of this, the display of the CF-33 is slightly smaller but the resolution is hugely improved with close to four times more pixels than the CF-31 was made with. This makes it a lot sharper, and a bright 1,200 nits backlight combined with anti-reflective and anti-glare treatments improve the quality of outdoor use.
In terms of weight, the CF-33 is much lighter, but because it is a two-in-one the keyboard (at 2.7 lbs) is lighter than the screen that becomes a tablet (3.4 lbs).
The core processor of the new CF-33 is considerably more advanced resulting in much-improved performance and efficiency. While the older, much-trusted CF-31 has a fifth generation Intel Broadwell Core i5 processor, the new CF-33 boasts a seventh generation Kaby Lake Core i5-7300 with Core i7-7600 chips. But you do need to run Windows 10. There is the option of a Windows 7 downgrade, but then the sixth generation Skylake Core i5-6300 and Core i7-6600 chips must be used because Kaby Lake doesn’t support anything prior to Windows 10.
The Ruggedness of the CF-33
While all Toughbooks can withstand being dropped and spilled upon at least to a certain extent, fully rugged devices are tested to the latest military standards and they can withstand the very harshest environments and rough treatment. They will resist dust and dirt and won’t be affected by temperature fluctuations, even freezing conditions or the most searing heat.
Some devices are semi-rugged whilst others are fully rugged.
The first fully rugged detachable Toughbook was the CF-20 launched in 2015. Two years later, the CF-33 is totally dustproof and protected against low-pressure jets of water that come from every possible direction. It can also be dropped from a height of up to four foot without damage and there is a certified version that may be used in specific locations that are hazardous.
