Panasonic has announced the launch of a new ruggedized Toughpad tablet they have dubbed “the first business tablet that doesn’t mind getting dirty.”
Scheduled for release in March, the 12.5“ Panasonic Toughpad FZ-Q1 has an Intel processor and runs Windows 8.1 Pro, with an upgrade option to Windows 10 Pro. It has been designed to meet the needs of highly mobile field workers who don’t want a fully rugged device, but need something that is more durable than regular consumer-grade tablets that simply don’t have the usability, reliability and security that other rugged devices provide.
Why Choose the Toughpad FZ-Q1?
Described as “a semi-rugged device,” the Toughpad FZ-Q1 will meet the needs of any business where workers need the productivity benefits and mobility of a rugged notebook when working in “less demanding” user environments away from traditional office settings. A lot lighter than fully rugged devices, the FZ-Q1 weighs just 2.3 lbs and features a large bezel around the outside that protects the display and touch panel against drops, also making to easier to hold without touching the screen.
Purpose-built, the new Panasonic tablet features a full high definition, 350 nit, 10 finger touch-screen that is anti-reflective. It has an easy-grip cover, integrated stylus, and a fast-charging battery that is superior to those used in consumer-grade tablets, and will last up to nine hours. The heated SSD drive allows the tablet to boot up anywhere, even when temperatures are as low as 14 °F. It has a magnesium alloy chassis and is supplied in a shock-absorbing case.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the possibility of a 4G LTE multi-carrier with satellite GPS. It also has an integrated option for insertable or contactless Smartcard readers. To ensure reliable connectivity, an attachable Panasonic-designed keyboard has a direct interface rather than one that is wireless. Additionally, there is no need to pair the keyboard dock with the tablet; when attached to the keyboard dock, the tablet will be recognized instantly.
It has an 8MP rear-facing camera and 2MP webcam, and features USB 3.0 as well as a MicroSDXC. A broad selection of accessories is offered, including a backlit keyboard that is spill resistant and has a handy carrying strap. A full desktop cradle with multiple I/O options is also available. This is perfect for those who spend part of their time in an office environment, as the cradle can power a VGA or HDMI monitor. The Intel Core i5 also has plenty of horsepower to drive desktop applications.
Its fanless design is ideal for those who frequently work in dusty, dirty conditions, or in environments where airborne pathogens might otherwise be caught in the mechanism, like clean rooms or food processing plants. The other advantage of the fanless design is that the tablet can be stored in a pouch or briefcase with there is limited air circulation.
Suitable for use in numerous fields from healthcare and POS retail environments, to code enforcement and transportation, the FZ-Q1 will be available in two configurations:
- A standard model with an Intel Celeron processor N2807, and 4GB RAM, that will retail at $999.
- A performance model with an Intel Core i5-4302Y vPro processor, and 8GB RAM, that will retail at $1,699.
Both come with a comprehensive three-year warranty with business-class support.
